Over several months in 2011 and 2012, nearly 3,000 tonnes of maple syrup valued at $18.7 million was stolen from a storage facility in Quebec.
It has been dubbed the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist.
That truly Canadian crime became the inspiration for the branding behind a “truly Canadian” beer from Cannery Brewing in Penticton.
It’s the Heist Maple Stout, which is packed full of the same kind of highly-coveted “liquid gold” that was stolen from that factory in Quebec.

Coming in at 5.5% ABV (alcohol by volume) and 40 IBUs (international bitterness units), this Canadian twist on a classic British beer pours as dark and heavy as you might expect.
Taste-wise, however, it’s a smooth and creamy mouthful that receives a nice balance of sweetness from the maple syrup.
While the presence of maple syrup is no secret in this beer, it will still offer up some of the more classic stout flavours like cocoa, coffee and roasted malts.
I don’t have a ton more to say on this bad boy because it’s a fairly straightforward beer, so I’ll keep this week’s column short and sweet.
If you enjoy stouts and want to try one that creatively utilizes one of Canada’s most important and beloved natural resources, go find yourself a can of the Heist Maple Stout from Cannery!
