There’s been plenty of talk about inflation and the rising cost of food in Canada of late.
While it’s a serious issue that warrants serious discussion, a lighthearted look at things never hurts either.
So what better way is there to compare food prices in Canada with the rest of the world than to look at the price of arguably the most universally-recognized fast food menu item in the world.
That, of course, would be the iconic Big Mac from McDonald’s.
International online insurance policy comparison platform HelloSafe has unveiled data that compares the price of a Big Mac in 73 countries as of January 2022.
Canada sits seventh on the list with a price of $6.75 CAD (all prices in this story are in Canadian dollars), slightly behind Uruguay and Israel.
Switzerland tops the list at $8.85 for a Big Mac, Norway is right behind them at $8.10 and the United States and Sweden round out the top four with prices of $7.37 and $7.34 respectively.
At the other end of the list, the Russian Federation has the cheapest Big Mac at just $2.21, but HelloSafe notes that “prices were taken just after the beginning of the Ukrainian war, which have had an influence in the position of Russia.”
The only other two countries to sell Big Macs for under $3 are Turkey ($2.36) and Indonesia ($2.99).
Malaysia, Romania, Ukraine, India, South Africa, Egypt, Philippines and Hong Kong are also featured near the bottom of the list.
