Amid rising costs, one BC restaurant has broken down the cost of a burger.
“With rising costs everywhere, and restaurant prices ever increasing, we thought we would do a breakdown of all our costs from 2022 to be transparent about our business,” Ferris Grill in Victoria.
First off, they noted that the breakdown was calculated from actual expenses from last year, and that it does not include charitable giving or marketing costs.
A cheeseburger and fries costs $21.50, and wages and benefits for staff takes $9.15 out of that right off the bat.
Then, the cost of ingredients to make one burger and fries equates to $7.10. Add another $1.44 for rent, 50 cents for supplies, 48 cents utilities, 45 cents for accounting and legal, 38 cents for credit card fees, 36 cents for maintenance and repairs, 21 cents for insurance and 19 cents for laundry.
At the end, the restaurant makes a total profit of $1.25 for each burger, according to their calculations.
“As business owners, we strive to create a place that can be enjoyed by the community. We have always tried to create good value for our guests, local and tourists alike. We also believe in a model where staff are paid fairly, have medical and dental benefits, and plenty of opportunities to advance,” added Ferris Grill.
“We felt it was important to be transparent about our business and what the reality of restaurants is in this post-Covid world. Please continue to support local, and understand when your bill has a little sticker shock wherever you may be dining. The restaurant world thanks you.”
