Funding was approved for restorations to the cenotaph on Battle Street at the Kamloops City Council meeting Tuesday afternoon.

The city recently received an anonymous $50,000 donation to repair the clocks atop the cenotaph in addition to a $25,000 grant from Heritage Canada, as well as a pair of $1,000 donations.

“The donation is amazing,” said Councillor Marg Spina. “I think it is really important we honour our veterans.”

It is estimated it will cost $90,000 to repair four clock faces and masonry of the cenotaph in addition to improving the surrounding landscaping to improve accessibility.

“Part of the landscaping around the monument is kind of a steeper drop-off, so we just want to make sure that the site is a little bit more accessible, and create a little bit more of a plaza around the monument so that it’s easier particularly for veterans and their families who wish to wish to visit the cenotaph,” said Arts, Culture & Heritage Manager Barbara Berger.

The Kamloops Museum and Archives will be leading the restoration project.

The City of Kamloops will add $13,000 to the 2016 financial plan in order to complete the restorations.
