President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada, Dr. Dawn Lavell-Harvard, will be speaking to Aboriginal students at Thompson Rivers University on Monday.
Lavell-Harvard's presentation is titled “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s Needs for a National Inquiry.” The talk will discuss the issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and how it ties into the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
“This is not just a women’s issue; this is a national tragedy and this is a national shame in Canada,” said Lavell-Harvard. “As the rates of homicides for women in Canada in general have gone down, the rates of homicides against indigenous women continues to go up.”
The presentation is open to Aboriginal students and invited guests and will take place at the Gathering House at 12-noon on November 2nd.
The Native Women’s Association of Canada is a national organization that has represented Aboriginal women since 1974 and work to provide support and foster social, economic, cultural, and political well-being for First Nations and Metis women.
