Pay-on-entry public parking coming to Royal Inland Hospital

A new parking payment system takes effect at the Clinical Services Building parkade at the Royal Inland Hospital this month.

The current pay-on-exit system will be replaced with a gateless pay-on-entry or pay-in-advance system.

Mike Youds, a communications officer at Interior Health, says the change is intended to shorten lineups and traffic congestion caused by the single-exit gate.

Instead of paying for parking at a payment machine when leaving the parkade, drivers will estimate their parking time as they arrive and make payment at one of four payment stations. Driver will have to enter their license plate number when first driving in.

This system,Youds says, is similar to one previously used for public parking at RIH. He says IH is making the change in response to public feedback it has been getting since the parkade opened in July.

Drivers with mobile devices can download the PayByPhone parking app, enabling them to make payment or extend their parking time without having to return to the parkade.

A parking ambassador will be at the parkade to help drivers as they adjust to the new system, and new signage will explain the payment options. Pamphlets will also be provided in the parkade to offer general parking information as well as details on the PayByPhone app.
