With Christmas Day right around the corner, this weekend will be filled with holiday joy and merriment. If you're hoping to get out and about and take in some holiday festivities, here are a few things we think you should check out:
With all the hustle and bustle around the holidays, why not start Christmas Day with a sense of calm? Yogis can catch Christmas Day yoga at the Yoga Loft as part of its five-day festival in honour of Ganesha. Each practice from December 21st to December 25th includes a different sadhana to represent a new beginning and mending the mistakes of the past. The Christmas Day practice will follow a theme of receiving harmony in all your worlds. What better way to find serenity during the holidays?! This class is by donation. Register here.
The Laughing Stock Theatre Society presents The Little Mermaid: A Panto Under the Sea, with showtimes on December 24th and December 27th (the play runs until December 31st). A traditional British Panto is a form of interactive theatre performed around the Christmas season. The stories are based on popular fairy tales, with storylines slightly skewed and featuring hilarious, over-the-top characters. See the Laughing Stock Theatre’s take on The Little Mermaid, which promises to be fun for the whole family. Find tickets online through the Kamloops Live box office. Children under five are free.
Take part in a holiday tradition at the BC Wildlife Park as they celebrate their 20th annual Wildlights Festival. The park is lit up with thousands of festive lights and holiday fun. Every day is packed with family-friendly activities. On December 23rd, Christmas story time is at 7 p.m., arctic wolf encounters are at 6 p.m. and Santa will be there for a visit. On December 24th, take part in the snowflake scavenger hunt, holiday maze and more. See the full schedule for both days here. Hours of operation are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., except for Christmas Day when the park is closed.
Studio 322 and Avenue Media House have partnered to present their first-ever pop-up market on December 23rd from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. featuring local retailers and artists. Vendors will include Factotum Cassettes and Oddities, Leon John’s Deli, art by Zachary Abney, Kapture Photography and more. The pop-up will also have live jazz music by The Aaron James MacInnis Group and beer from Red Collar and Iron Road. Check it out at 201-322 Victoria Street.
The lifts start turning at Harper Mountain Friday night, and the mountain is open for daytime skiing and boarding starting Saturday. The SnowTown tube park will also be open daily for the holidays starting this weekend. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but closed Christmas Day. Night tubing also starts Friday night. Find rates and rental details on the Harper Mountain website.
