A Way Home Kamloops was excited to announce that their first "Safe Suites" opened in the city this afternoon.
A total of six suites will provide six homeless youths in the community with a home for Christmas.
In addition to providing six new units of housing, they will also include 24/7 staffing to support the residents. A Way Home Kamloops has worked on the project for many years, with the goal to provide the homeless with a place to stay during the cold winter months.
During operations, the province of BC will provide funding to ensure the youths have access to on-site supports they need to succeed. This includes meal services, case management, life skills training, and counselling.
Youth will live on-site until land for a new supportive housing building is secured and construction is complete. This is a significant step to combating youth homelessness in the community.
In 2018, a total of 136 Kamloops residents said they experienced youth homelessness during the year.
