A special air quality statement has been issued for a large section of the Southern Interior due to wildfire smoke.
Environment Canada issued the statement Wednesday afternoon.
It includes parts of the Columbia-Shuswap, the South and North Thompson, most of the Central Kootenay region and an area south of Princeton.
Wildfire smoke is expected to impact the area for the next 24 to 48 hours.
“The fine particles in wildfire smoke pose the main health risk,” the weather statement says.
“Those who are more likely to be impacted should reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors or seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.”
That includes seniors, pregnant women, people who smoke, infants and young children, people who work outdoors, people involved in strenuous outdoor exercise and people with an existing illness or chronic health condition.
People are advised to limit their time outdoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible and drink plenty of water.
An smoky skies bulletin, which was also issued Wednesday, has a full list of communities that are being impacted by the wildfire smoke.
