(UPDATE: Nov. 21 @ 2:10 pm) – After two and a half months, 6th Avenue is scheduled to reopen for the winter.
Crews started work on the bike lane in mid-September and they are now shutting down construction for the winter.
All streets, sidewalks and alleys in the construction zone between Lansdowne Street and Columbia Street will be fully reopened.
However, the inbound bus stop on 6th Avenue between Columbia Street and Nicola Street will remain closed.
In October, the second phase of this project, from Battle Street to Lansdowne Street, was rescheduled to spring 2023.
(Original Story: Sept. 11 @ 11:58 am) – Construction on 6th Avenue bike lane is scheduled to begin on Monday.
Residents are advised that 6th Avenue between Lansdowne Street and Columbia Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction during the construction.
Work will take place Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm with the possibility of some evening and weekend work.
The city says the construction is expected to be completed on Nov. 30.
However, parking will not be impacted with the exception of a few short term closures.
Additionally, transit routes are not anticipated to be affected but inbound (northbound) transit stop on 6th Avenue will be temporarily closed.
The bike lane project is part of the larger Summit–Downtown Active Transportation Connection.
Once completed, the separated, fully protected two way bike lane will run from Columbia Street to Lansdowne Street.
The goal is to allow “cyclists to travel in both directions from the Lansdowne Bus Exchange to Peterson Creek Park, including Xget'tem' Trail, which has served almost 70,000 users per year since opening in 2018,” explains the city.
