The Kamloops Centre for the Arts has been moved forward another step.
During the Tuesday afternoon meeting, Kamloops City Council committed to building the centre through the implementation of the Recreation Master Plan.
Council approved a recommendation from the Build Kamloops Council Select Committee to authorize $7 million in funding to complete the validation and detailed design phase of the centre.
The city’s Build Kamloops Committee supported a motion last month to send a recommendation to city council to consider the approval.
According to the city, the committee has identified the Kamloops Centre for the Arts as the first priority for the Build Kamloops program due to a “long-standing” need for such a venue.
Local philanthropist Ron Fawcett, one of the driving forces behind the venue, said the updated conceptual plans for the centre was the result of over a decade of engagement, dedication and investment.
However, without the city’s endorsement, the project couldn’t be moved forward.
“This next phase will get us certainty on timelines and costs, which will allow us to build out the financing model,” said Deputy CAO Byron McCorkell.
“A shovel-ready project will allow us to apply for grants, seek other funding sources, and determine the level of investment we’ll need as a city to make this a reality.”
