City of Kamloops seeks judge's approval to euthanize 3 dogs involved in fatal attack

Three dogs involved in a fatal attack last month are set to be euthanized, the City of Kamloops announced Thursday morning.

On Sept. 8, a border collie was attacked and killed by the dogs.

On Sept. 9, the city said the dogs were seized and the Community Services team began investigating. The dogs have remained in the city’s custody ever since.

On Thursday, the city said the Community Services team has worked with a veterinarian and an animal behaviour specialist as part of their investigation.

The city said the opinion of those professionals and other evidence of the attack has led to the decision to put the dogs down.

“Based on the cumulative evidence, the City believes that the seized dogs cannot be safely rehabilitated, nor can safety measures be imposed on the dogs in a way that adequately protects public safety and prevents future injuries to humans or animals,” the city said in a statement.

The City of Kamloops has filed a provincial court application, seeking a declaration that all three dogs are dangerous and an order that the animals be euthanized.

“The safety and well-being of our community and their pets remains a key priority,” the statement said.

“We understand the gravity of this event and the distress it has caused both the owners and the broader community.”

No other information has been provided by the city at this time.
