Cleanup continues following flash floods in Savona over the weekend.
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on Monday and has partnered with the Skeetchestn Indian Band and Savona Improvement District to offer debris removal to Savona residents.
About 20 homes were impacted by the flash flooding but no injuries have been reported and no critical infrastructure was damaged.
According to the TNRD, volunteers from Skeetchestn Indian Band will begin helping with debris removal on Wednesday. However, volunteers and TNRD contractors will not be entering structures or private property to remove material or help with cleanup.
“The initial focus will be on mud, trees, and organic materials, which will be gathered and taken to the Savona Transfer Station for processing,” the TNRD says in a news release.
“Residents who have this organic material on their properties are encouraged (as able) to move it to the curbside for pick up.”
Additionally, curbside collection will be happening on Monday July 8 to collect household flood debris.
The TNRD is asking flood affected residents should sort debris into the following piles:
Drywall and asbestos containing materials (please keep separate, double bag in 6 mil bags)
Mattresses, metal, large appliances, and furniture (stacked neatly)
Any spoiled food must be removed from fridges/freezers and double bagged
Wood and large building debris
Bagged refuse (food waste should be double bagged and placed at curbside Monday morning before 8 a.m.)
No hazardous or liquid materials such as oil, gas or other chemicals will be accepted curbside
