Construction has now started on the future Monte Creek Firehall, which will service over 350 properties.
A contract was awarded to West Alliance Construction earlier this week for a maximum cost of $1.045 million.
After a few weeks of design work, construction began earlier this month at the firehall property, located at 1257 Hook Rd.
The new firehall is expected to be ready for operation by next summer.
Fire protection services started in January 2023 with crews operating out of the Pritchard Firehall along with the Pritchard Fire Department.
Those two fire departments will continue to work together until the new building is ready.
The firefighters will service properties in Electoral Areas “L” (Grasslands) and “P” (Rivers and the Peaks), including Monte Creek, Del Oro, Lafarge, and the eastern portion of Barnhartvale,
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District says the total capital budget for the project is up to $2.25 million, which includes construction, the purchase of a new fire truck, water tender, firefighting equipment and other costs.
The Canada Community Building Fund is providing $1 million to the project alongside $1.25 million in referendum-approved borrowing.
