Construction starting on long-awaited outdoor rink in Riverside Park

It’s been nearly two years since Kamloops council agreed to fund an outdoor rink at Riverside Park and construction is set to get underway this week.

The project received funding in April 2023, something the Kamloops Outdoor Skating Association had been working towards for about five years.

The rink’s location was adjusted in February 2024 to accommodate the waterpark at Riverside Park.

The outdoor skating rink will be intended for free, community-wide, non-programmed drop-in skating from December to March.

During the winter months, the rink will host events like festivals, live music, food vendors, seasonal celebrations and will include an opportunity for skate rentals.

During the summer, the concrete pad will be available for hosting food trucks and other recreational activities.

The facility is expected to be done and ready for use in early 2026.

According to a news release from the city, construction is not expected to impact the water park or playground and is expected to have minimal disruption to the green space and general park users.

The project was fully funded by a $7.16 million grant from the Province’s Growing Communities Fund.
