Exhibit exploring day trips, local destinations opens at Kamloops museum this week

A new exhibit is launching at the Kamloops Museum and Archives on Saturday.

The exhibit is called GO Daytripping in Kamloops: An Auto-Biography and draws on the j.H. Clements family collections from the archives.

It will explore what small moments and forms of “pleasant-weather” trips were like 100 years ago.

“In a moment where many things, good and bad, seem to be presented with excess and urgency, the day trip is a brief, accessible bit of escape into pleasure,” the city says in a release.

“By car, by bus, by bike, or by foot, the day trip is a form of light leisure that can re-energize a return to the realities of contemporary life.”

The exhibit will present photographs, objects and ways to participate in, presenting a small form of “late winter escapism” and a way to rediscover the wealth of small pleasures the city has to offer.

Some of the ways guests can participate and learn include capturing and sharing your 2024 day trip to one of the locations showcased in the exhibit or explore a completely new location.

People are then invited to share a photograph by tagging the Kamloops Museum and Archives on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. You can also bring a printed copy down to the museum.

Another fun activity, which starts in March, will include a monthly picture puzzle. A new clue will be revealed each week at the museum and on it’s social media pages and guests can help solve the puzzle.

“Once you’ve figured it out, either put your answer in the comments online or fill out a card at the Kamloops Museum and Archives. Correct answers will be entered into a draw for a fabulous prize,” the city says.

Additionally, guests can also borrow a Local Road Trip Kit and will be available for walking, bussing or car destinations. Each kit will include curated activities.

Reserving kits is required and can be done online. A recreation account will need to be created.

Once the road trip kit is completed, you can return it to the museum and submit your pictures for a chance to enter a grand prize draw.

The exhibition and activities will be open to the public from February 24 to June 22, 2024.

Kamloops Museum and Archives is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
