Explosives unit called in after small pipe bomb found on Kamloops beach

The Kamloops RCMP is making an appeal for witnesses after an explosive device was found on the shores of the Thompson River on New Year’s Day.

Around 1:20 pm, officers responded to a call about the discovery of a suspicious item on the beach near Schubert Drive and Richmond Avenue.

The initial response led to a quick decision to call in the RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU).

“Based on the appearance of the item, officers believed it was a very small pipe bomb, which was later confirmed,” said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn.

“Police immediately protected the area from public access until the EDU could attend and safely dispose of the item later that day.”

The RCMP is urging anyone who witnessed the pipe bomb being placed on the beach, or anyone with general information on the incident, to call the Kamloops detachment at 250-828-3000.
