Kamloops Film Society hosting events for the Paramount Theatre's 70th anniversary

The Kamloops Film Society is hosting several events this month to mark the 70th anniversary of the Paramount Theatre.

The special anniversary weekend will be held from April 11-13 and will include showings of classic films, beyond-the-scenes tours, and a display on the history of the theatre.

“Cinema has long been a vital part of our community’s cultural fabric, shaping our stories, bringing us together, and inspiring new generations,” says Colette Abbott, Kamloops Film Society Executive Director.

Other special celebrations include a panel on the theatre's history and cultural impact on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 pm.

That is followed by a free screening of a documentary Your Cinema Needs You, which explores the importance of community cinemas.

On Saturday, April 12, there will be a screening of the James Dean film Rebel Without A Cause.

On April 13, there will be a free open house at the theatre from 1-3 pm.

There will be cake and refreshments with opportunities to explore the history of movie theatres in Kamloops along with tours of the theatre.

At 3 pm, there will be a screening of Lady and The Tramp.

If you can’t miss the first screening of Your Cinema Needs You, there will be another on April 13 at 3:15 pm.

In addition, the Kamloops Museum and Archives will be opening a new exhibit called Wide Angle on Friday, April 11 with a reception from 5-7 pm.

The exhibit highlights Kamloops’ place in film history and explores the city’s role on the big screen and celebrates its film legacy.

“This exhibit is a wonderful way to celebrate the wider history of film in our region while also recognizing the role that spaces like the Paramount play in shaping our cultural identity,” Abbott said.

The exhibit will run until Sept. 27.
