The Kamloops RCMP have provided more information about a “high-risk” search warrant that was carried out in Chase on April 22 and saw a large cache of weapons seized.
On May 1, the RCMP held a media availability to show the media the items seized and to provide more details about the large police response.
“Explosives, guns, body armour, and equipment for illegally manufacturing firearms were seized during the investigation led by the Kamloops RCMP Detachment’s Targeted Enforcement Unit (TEU),” said Supt. Pelley, standing behind two tables of carefully labeled and presented items.
“It’s important to note that our investigators are still processing exhibits and this is a sample of what was seized during this one particular investigation.”
Other items seized included drill presses, metal lathes, 3D printers and airsoft guns.
According to the police, the guns being manufactured and trafficked were untraceable firearms, some 3D printed, others with serial numbers removed.
In a news release issued Thursday afternoon, the Kamloops RCMP said they released a public interest disclosure about one year ago that saw two people named who were connected to the organized drug trade and to the violent conflict impacting the community.
Supt. Pelley did not say the firearms manufacturing/trafficking investigation was related to those two people or the several shootings that happened last May, but he did say the investigation had a direct connection to Kamloops.
“We have seen in our community the acquirement of firearms being used in public offences. Firearms entering communities is a concern,” he noted.
“Targeting those who manufacture, distribute, and use them, including those involved in drug trafficking, remains a detachment priority and we look forward to more results in the future.”
During the media availability, Supt, Pelley was asked about reticent investigations in rural Kamloops, including a Paul Lake homicide and the discovery of human remains in the Pendelton Creek area.
Supt. Pelley said there was no connection at this time and the recent acts of violence are believed to be targeted as opposed to the very public shootings that happened last year.
The Kamloops RCMP Detachment’s Targeted Enforcement Unit’s investigation is ongoing and charge recommendations are anticipated.
