Kamloops Search and Rescue has a new team member.
Ada, a three-year-old German Shepherd-Bernese Mountain Dog cross, passed her wilderness course with owner Carole Capper last week.
She will now join KSAR’s other two dog teams.
“Ada is ready to assist in a search when the RCMP task us,” said Capper, who has been with KSAR since 2014.
“Not only do dogs have great scenting skills, but they can see well at night. It is estimated that one search dog can be the equivalent of 20 to 30 human searchers, so that may help save crucial time on a search.”
A search dog handler puts in about 2,000 hours of unpaid training time over the first two years of the dog's life and spends thousands of dollars – mostly at the handler’s cost – in the process.
