Kamloops council agrees to temporarily allow alcohol consumption in Riverside Park

The City of Kamloops is temporarily allowing alcohol consumption in Riverside Park this summer.

At a council meeting earlier this week, city councillors adopted amendments to the Parks and Public Lands Bylaw.

One of the amendments to the bylaw allows for liquor consumption in the Riverside Park bandshell area from May 15 until Oct. 1 between noon and 9 pm.

The area matches the area where Music in the Park is held throughout July and August.

Alcohol consumption is not allowed in any other parks in Kamloops.

Council was told that once the pilot program is done, a report will be brought to council and will include feedback from participants, community protective services and results.

The report will also include next steps council can take, which could include potentially expanding the program in future years, revising the rules or keeping it the way it is.
