Kamloops elementary school reopening 5 years after tragic fire

Parkcrest Elementary School is set to reopen in two weeks, five years after a fire destroyed the old building.

A tragic fire destroyed the former school on Sept. 5, 2019.

About 10 days later, Parkcrest students were relocated to George Hilliard, where they stayed until the end of the 2024 school year.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, the school will reopen to the neighbourhood.

The Kamloops-Thompson Board of Education says this marks an important milestone and celebration for students and their families.

Funding for the new expanded building was announced in January 2021.

School District 73 says an investment of $34.84 million from the province and another $300,000 from the Kamloops-Thompson School District made it possible to rebuild.

“The City of Kamloops also committed up to $2.5 million for the additional space required for a larger, full size gymnasium and change room facilities for sporting events,” the school says.

Not only was the school rebuilt to be more energy efficient, it was built with a larger capacity of 510 seats to prepare for enrollment growth.

Construction began in 2022 and students will return to the school for the 2024-2025 school year.
