Kamloops man arrested after weapons complaint at motel closes major road

A 47-year-old Kamloops man was arrested following a police incident that disrupted traffic on Wednesday.

Kamloops RCMP officers were called to a motel in the 500 block of Columbia Street West shortly before 7 pm after receiving a report of a man in possession of a firearm.

While police responded to the incident, officers stopped both vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Columbia Street West for a brief period.

“Officers from the Southeast District Emergency Response Team along with the Police Dog Service assisted frontline officers in containing the area and safely taking the man into custody,” said S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet. “An imitation firearm was recovered in a subsequent search of the scene.”

The suspect was brought into custody but has since been released as the investigation continues.

The RCMP is urging anyone with information on this incident who has not yet spoken with police to call the Kamloops detachment at 250-828-3000.
