Over this past weekend, the Kamloops RCMP responded to 288 calls for service between Friday, Jan. 24 and Monday, Jan. 27.
Cpl. Crystal Evelyn, spokesperson for the detachment, highlighted a few of the cases, which included two Mental Health Act (MHA) apprehensions and a weapons report involving a reported firearm.
On Friday afternoon, the RCMP were called to the 2100-block of Young Avenue around 2:20 pm for a report of a person experiencing a mental health crisis and alleged yelling and swinging an axe. The RCMP found the person barricaded inside a residence on Greenfield Avenue.
The Southeast District Emergency Response Team was called in to help. About five and a half hours later, shortly after 7:30 pm, the person surrendered and was apprehended under the MHA. They were taken to the hospital for an assessment.
Police were called to the Overlander Bridge Saturday afternoon, around 4:40 pm, for a report of a person having a mental health crisis. The bridge was closed as police responded. The person was safely apprehended under the MHA with the help from the Integrated Crisis Response Team and taken to the hospital for a medical assessment.
Two people were arrested Sunday afternoon for mischief and public intoxication in relation to a weapons report. Multiple police officers responded to the 700-block of Fortune Drive where a person reportedly had what appeared to be a firearm. Two people were located nearby. Police officers seized a bb-gun and a large knife.
Both people were taken to the cells to sober up and later released without process.
