Kamloops ranked 67th most violent place in Canada for 2020

(A Previous version of this article listed Kamloops as the 67th most dangerous city in Canada when it was actually the 67th most violent city. That correction has been made.)

MacLean's list of the most dangerous places in Canada for 2020 was released on Tuesday and Kamloops proved to be sketchier than in years past.

The list ranked cities with the highest level of overall crime from Statistics Canada. In the gallery, communities are ranked by their crime severity index (CSI) in 2018, the most recent year with data available.

Kamloops goes into next year being ranked the 67th-most violent place in Canada with a violent crime severity index of 88. For overall crime, Kamloops had a CSI of 101, putting them as the 50th most dangerous city.

In 2018, Kamloops had only one homicide for a homicide rate of 1.02. That number is less than the Canadian average of 1.76.

Kamloops had 642 assaults, 107 sexual assaults, 544 fraud charges, 239 impaired driving incidents, and 19 youth criminal justice offenses during the year, all of which were above the national average.

The River City also had 315 break and enters, 10 cocaine trafficking incidents, 38 robberies, and four firearm offenses. These incidents were actually well below the average.

Despite the relatively high ranking, Kamloops was fairly safe from violent crimes compared to much of the BC Interior, Okanagan, and Caribou. Vernon came in ranked 44th, Prince George ranked 19th, Williams Lake ranked ninth, and Quesnel was all the way at number five.

Coming in at number one was North Battleford, Saskatchewan with a CSI of 384.57. The safest spot in Canada was LaSalle, Ontario which had a CSI of 12.
