Kamloops is currently sitting 23rd on Maclean’s 2018 list of Canada’s Most Dangerous Places.
The list is based on a report which ranks communities according to the Crime Severity Index (CSI). It takes into consideration the volume and seriousness of the crimes in the location.
“Smaller communities tend to be more susceptible to inflated crime rates, with one or two incidents getting magnified when they are recast for a population of 100,000. For this reason, Maclean’s ranks cities based on the crime severity index,” Maclean’s explains.
According to the report, firearm offences and impaired driving have gone down in the past year, while assault, sexual assault, robbery and breaking and entering crimes have increased.
The biggest crimes in Kamloops are breaking and entering and assault. Breaking and entering sits at 551.19 with the Canadian average being 438.51, and assault at 538.82 with a national average of 430.68.
The Crime Severity Index of Kamloops is 128, which is above the Canadian average of 70.96. The Violent Crime Severity Index sits at 99, which is also above the Canadian average of 75.25.
The city with the unwanted title of the most dangerous city goes to North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Their overall Crime Severity Index is 353 and is nearly five times the national average.
