Kamloops residents invited to annual Clean the Beach event

The City of Kamloops is calling on residents to roll up their sleeves and join the Clean the Beach event, a community-driven initiative to keep local riverbanks clean and beautiful on Sunday, April 19, 2026, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Held each spring to coincide with Earth Day, the cleanup takes advantage of lower seasonal water levels to support volunteer safety and reduce ecological impact along our riverbanks.

This annual family-friendly cleanup will once again focus on litter collection along designated routes near Riverside Park and Overlanders Park. Collected materials will be secured in bags and placed in designated areas for City staff to remove.

To help organizers plan materials and routes, residents are encouraged to register in advance online. Registration will remain open until 9 am on Friday, April 17.

Rain or shine, volunteers are asked to arrive at the east end of Riverside Park by 11 am. On arrival, volunteers will receive a route map, collection materials and guidance on the safe handling of materials, including glass or other hazardous debris. Participants are advised to wear closed-toe shoes, bring work gloves and, if available, high-visibility vests.

Pre-event beach sweeps for sharps and other potentially harmful materials will be conducted by social agencies participating in the Clean Team supportive employment program, encouraging a safe environment for all participants.

“Every volunteer plays a meaningful role in protecting and caring for our riverfront,” said Ashley Ekelund, the City’s Social and Community Development Supervisor. “This event is a great opportunity to show up for our environment for our community, helping to keep beaches and riverfront clean, safe and beautiful for everyone.”

To thank volunteers for their efforts, a celebratory BBQ including live music, environmental info booths and prizes will be held at the east end of Riverside Park following the cleanup.
