The next phase of the City Centre Sanitary Upgrade project will cause a two week closure of a section of Lansdowne Street.
Starting Monday, Sept. 23, crews will begin the fourth phase
Most recently, the third phase had the 400-block down to single-lane traffic.
During the fourth phase, the 500-block of Lansdowne Street will be fully closed due to the depth of the pipe in the ground and the narrow width of the corridor.
The city said in a news release that the 5th Avenue intersection will also be closed for about two weeks.
Traffic will be detoured south on 6th Avenue to St. Paul Street, westbound on St. Paul Street to 3rd Avenue, then northbound on 3rd Avenue to Lansdowne Street.
“The 500 block contains the deepest part of the trench work with the pipe sitting at roughly 5 m underground. Typically, sewer service has a depth of about 1.5 m–2 m,” said Matt Kachel, the city’s infrastructure delivery divisional manager.
“For that reason, a full detour is required in this area.”
Once the deep trench work is done, Lansdowne Street will return to one lane of traffic through the 500-block and the 5th Avenue intersection will reopen to traffic in all directions, the city said.
The fifth, and final, phase of the project is expected to begin in mid-October and will involve another full closure of Lansdowne Street from 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue.
Local traffic only access will be given to specific businesses and more details will be provided once crews begin that work.
