A pillar in the Kamloops judicial community was just named to BC's highest court.
Len Marchand Jr, the son of Len Marchand Sr, who was Canada's first Indigenous Member of Parliament and first Indigenous cabinet minister under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, was appointed to the BC Court of Appeal on Wednesday.
The news was made official following an announcement from Federal Justice Minister David Lametti.
Marchand's law career began after graduating from the University of Victoria in 1994. He began practising law at Fulton and Company in Kamloops from 1995 to 2013.
After countless years in Kamloops, Marchand was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia where he served out of the Kelowna seat. He was in that position from 2013 until 2017.
Marchand will be replacing Justice H.M. Groberman, who elected to become a supernumerary judge in November. The only other BC judge joining Marchand will be Justice F. Matthew Kirchner.
“I wish Justices Marchand and Kirchner every success as they take on their new roles," said Lametti. "I am confident they will serve the people of British Columbia well as members of the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of British Columbia.”
