Shortly after a flood watch was issued for the Lower Thompson region, the Village of Cache Creek declared a local state of emergency.
On Sunday, the BC River Forecast Centre upgraded a high streamflow advisory after the risk of flooding increased in the small town.
As temperatures reached unseasonal highs over the weekend, the spring freshet has begun in many areas of the Interior.
The village’s creek exceeded its banks in some places Sunday evening.
“At this time a single property is under evacuation order. The RCMP have already been in contact with the property owner. No other properties are currently under evacuation alert or order,” says a post from community officials.
The intersection of Highway 1 and Quarts Road was closed Sunday evening after flooding began to cause debris piles up in a culvert.
The village says it will continue to monitor the situation and encourages people to remain at least 20 feet away from the banks of all waterways, especially near the village’s firehall which is quite close to the creek.
The flood watch for Lower Thompson is being maintained on Monday.
The BCRFC says warm weather has increased snowmelt rates, particularly in mid-elevation areas with snowmelt being recorded at 25 mm to 50 mm.
