A longtime deli in downtown Kamloops announced that it is facing a permanent closure at the end of the summer.
Dalton and Anita Strong, owners of the Smorgasbord Deli and Country Garden Greenhouse, announced the closure on Monday morning.
The Country Garden Greenhouse has been doing business in Kamloops since 1982 and the two businesses opened on Victoria Street in 1999.
Anita says the building has been purchased by a “pizza joint” and they have to move at the end of August.
“We have been talking about retiring anyway but may end up just closing up the shop,” adds Anita.
“Not that we want to, but we don’t have anyone ready to take over in this short amount of time.”
A longtime customer approached the Strong’s about the possibility of a cooperative ownership and other investment options, citing that she would hate to see this longtime local spot close.
There will be an information session for prospective cooperators on Wednesday, April 24 from 5:30-7:30.
People will learn about cooperatives generally and the possibility of co-owning the Smorgasbord and Country Garden Greenhouse specifically. More information is available here.
