The search continues for a young man who jumped off the Overlander Bridge and into the Thompson River.
The Kamloops RCMP says the 23-year-old is “presumed to have drowned.”
According to police, the man jumped off the west side of the bridge early Wednesday evening.
Witnesses told police that the man briefly surfaced before disappearing under the water and attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful.
Kamloops Search and Rescue was tasked by the RCMP to assist in the search around 7:30 pm, with members of the swiftwater team responding. Aerial searches were conducted as well.
The man was not found Wednesday night and the search resumed this morning.
“KSAR will be actively searching both in the water and along the shores of the Thompson River today,” a Facebook post said.
“We kindly ask the public to give our team the space needed to conduct these efforts safely and effectively.”
While the 23-year-old has been identified by family and friends on social media, police are not going public with his name at this time.
The search comes less than four weeks after the drowning death of Jatin Garg in a similar area of the Thompson River.
The 27-year-old was swept away on Sunday, July 6, after entering the river at Overlander Park, just east of the bridge, to try and retrieve a volleyball.
Barg’s body was located and pulled from the river on Tuesday, July 15.
