Byron McCorkell has officially been named as the city’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).
The city made the announcement Friday morning, adding that McCorkell will take over the position effective Tuesday, Oct. 15 on "an interim measure."
McCorkell has served as the acting CAO for about a year.
He took over the role after former CAO David Trawin took an extended personal leave of absence, a news release from the city says.
The city says McCorkell has “demonstrated exemplary leadership and dedication to the community.”
“We are delighted to confirm Byron McCorkell as our new Chief Administrative Officer,” said Deputy Mayor Mike O’Reilly.
“We are confident that his vision and experience will continue to benefit our community and ensure the efficient and effective delivery of municipal services.”
Although McCorkell has served as acting CAO since last fall, he has actually been with the city since 1999 when he started out as the Parks and Recreation Director position.
McCorkell says he is honoured to accept the role and continue serving the city.
“It has been a privilege to work with the dedicated staff and leadership of this municipality, and I am excited to take on this responsibility and help move Kamloops forward,” he said in the news release.
McCorkell’s tenure hit a speed bump when mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson suspended him in early March.
While the mayor had the authority to do that, city councillors were able to overturn the position and voiced their support for McCorkell and voted to keep him in the position.
