It’s a milestone no Olympic athlete will ever forget. While we’ll certainly be celebrating Canadian talent bringing home gold from Pyeongchang, one of the country’s most beloved athletes is celebrating the golden anniversary of her shining moment.
On Feb. 15, Sun Peaks is hosting celebrations in honour of the 50th anniversary of Nancy Greene Raine’s gold medal win in Grenoble, France.
Greene Raine, who was voted Canada’s Female Athlete of the 20th Century, took gold in the giant slalom and silver in slalom at the 1968 Winter Olympics
“It’s hard to believe that it has been 50 years since the Grenoble Olympics, an event that certainly changed my life,” Greene Raine said.
She and her husband Al Raine, who is the mayor of Sun Peaks, have called the ski town home for more than two decades. Greene Raine has also been the director if skiing at Sun Peaks Resort since 1994.
To mark the anniversary, Sun Peaks is hosting a weekend of celebrations five decades from the day Greene Raine celebrated her gold medal win.
Events get underway on Feb. 15 at 11 a.m., with the opportunity to ski with the Olympic Champion followed by a flag parade and presentation at noon in the village.
Festivities will continue in the evening with a public reception and Olympic celebration at Masa’s Bar and Grill from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. which will include Olympic coverage, live music and complementary appetizers.
Greene Raine is also being celebrated in the Kamloops Museum’s exhibition on the history of local ski culture and the notable figures who shaped it.
The exhibit, Powder Keg, Downhill Ski Culture in Kamloops, opened on Friday, Feb. 2 and will run until May 26.
