Kamloops Fire Rescue will not be issuing permits for fireworks sale or use this summer.
The announcement was made Wednesday morning as the city reminded the community about fire safety with the Canada Day long weekend approaching.
Scott Johnson, Assistant Chief, Kamloops Fire Rescue, says despite some rain this spring, the region is still “drought stressed, dry and primed to burn.”
“Regardless of the amount of rain we might receive, residents should understand the extreme risk of fire in our city during the summer remains due to our desert-like environment,” Johnson sys in a news release.
“It only takes one spark to create disastrous consequences.”
A $250 fine can be issued for using, possessing, storing or selling illegal fireworks without a valid permit from Kamloops Fire Rescue.
Kamloops Fire Rescue is also reminding residents of the danger of outdoor burning.
Backyard fires, beach fires and any open flame in public spaces are banned throughout the city to prevent potential wildfires and ensure the safety of the community.
Propane, natural gas or charcoal briquette-fueled appliances designed for cooking food or for heating outdoor spaces (Canadian Standards Association certified) are allowed in private spaces like backyards and patios.
Those appliances and other open flame fires are not permitted in public spaces like city parks, natural spaces or beaches.
The city and Kamloops Fire Rescue remind all residents that if they see a fire within city limits, call 911 and report it. If it is outside of city limits, call 911 or *5555 from a cell phone.
