BC’s Ministry of Housing has announced plans for a new supportive housing project for homeless people in Kamloops
Fifty four studio homes will be built in a new housing project once BC Housing successfully purchases a site at 285 Leigh Rd., a news release says.
However, the purchase of the property is dependent on a successful rezoning application that is headed to city council in early September.
According to the release, a public hearing will not be required because the proposed use is in line with the city’s Official Community Plan and neighbours have been informed.
The future building will have 24/7 staffing, security measures, pace to provide meals and support services.
A public tender will be issued by BC Housing for an operator to manage daily operations.
If approved, construction on the project will likely begin in mid-2025.
Additional work is being done between the City of Kamloops and BC Housing to bring the Homeless Encampment Action Response Team and Homeless Encampment Action Temporary Housing (HEARTH) programs to the community.
Although planning is in the early stages, 100 units could be possible, the news release says.
