Power of Being a Girl Conference coming up this month

Nobody understands what a 13-year-old girl is going through better than her peers. As part of a generation whose life is defined by social media and the internet, today’s teens are coming of age an era unlike any other.

The YMCA-YWCA Power of Being a Girl Conference helps girls learn to navigate the challenges of growing up in 2017 in an empowering way and is planned by girls, for girls.

Hope Mikal, Jacquie Brand, Tanya Pawliuk and Yvette LaFlamme from the POBAG planning team.

The one-day conference conference for girls ages 12 to 14 is free to attend and happening October 18th at the TCC. Spaces usually fill up but registration is still available.

The Power of Being a Girl Conference is in it 12th year and coincides with the YMCA’s Week Without Violence, happening October 16th to October 22nd.

Workshops include:

  • Social media busting, exploring how social media influences how young girls see themselves;
  • Hats of individuality, a hat-designing class where girls are invited to explore their identity and self awareness through examining the ways they express their individuality;
  • Theatre games and decision making in which girls brainstorm strategies for positive decision making in the face of peer pressure;
  • Strong by Zumba, a motivational workout to music;
  • and Genderbread building to help girls understand the complexity and fluidity of gender.

The workshops were designed in the spring by a planning team that includes girls who will also attend the conference. Participants choose two workshops to attend, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The conference runs 8:30 to 3 p.m. and includes lunch. Register on the YMCA-YWCA website.
