UPDATE: Burnaby woman killed in head-on crash on Hwy 1 in Kamloops

(UPDATE: Aug. 20 @ 9:35 am) - The RCMP has confirmed that the serious crash on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) in Kamloops has claimed the life of a Burnaby woman.

The crash happened just west of the Hwy 5 turnoff around 3 pm on Thursday.

According to the RCMP, the Burnaby woman was driving a red Toyota Echo eastbound when she crossed the centre line and collided head on with a UPS truck.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in her vehicle and the driver of the UPS truck were both transported to hospital.

The passenger was in serious, but stable condition, while the delivery truck driver received non-life-threatening injuries.

Hwy 1 was closed for more than four hours while investigators attended and cleanup occurred, but it reopened to traffic around 7:30 pm.

The RCMP continues to investigate this fatal crash and the BC Coroners Service has also launched its own investigation into the woman's untimely death.

Anyone with information regarding this crash is urged to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000.

(UPDATE: Aug. 19 @ 8 pm) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) has reopend in both directions just west of the Hwy 5 turnoff in Kamloops.

It was closed for around four hours following a serious crash that witnesses at the scene reported to be potentially fatal.

The RCMP has not provided any further information on the crash at this time.

(UPDATE: Aug. 19 @ 3:50 pm) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) is now closed in Kamloops, just west of the Hwy 5 turnoff.

The closure is do to what the RCMP called a serious crash and witnesses on scene are reporting that it could potentially be fatal.

"A guy is going down the line saying there is a fatality," tweeted Erin Barker, who also reported that a UPS truck was involved in the crash.

There's no estimated time for the highway to reopen, but given the serious nature of the crash it will likely be shut down for some time.

There is no detour available.

(Original story: Aug. 19 @ 3:30 pm) - There’s been a serious crash at the junction between Hwy 1 and Hwy 5 on the south side of Kamloops.

The RCMP is asking the public to avoid the area and to “expect road closures, the extent of which are unknown at this time.”

DriveBC said an assessment is currently in progress and to expect delays and congestion, but didn’t report any official closure at this time.
