Kamloops RCMP was called out to Westsyde Secondary School today after receiving reports of a smoke bomb going off inside the school.
In an email sent at 1 p.m. by vice principal Justin deVries, he explained that at lunchtime, a student set off a commercially made device that created a large amount of smoke in the halls. deVries adds that the students enacted the fire drill procedure and evacuated safely to a backfield within ten minutes.
According to a Westsyde student who wished to remain anonymous, the smoke bomb went off in the school cafeteria, shot purple sparks and filled the halls with smoke almost immediately.
"In the cafeteria, there was a purple smoke bomb let off,.." said the student. "They had to close all the doors to make sure it didn't get out and then we had to leave the school like it was a fire drill almost."
"I wasn't scared really, I was just kind of confused why someone would do it, to be honest."
Once all the students were outside, industrial fans were put in place to displace the smoke, though the smell still lingered.
"When they opened the doors just to check, you couldn't even see, it was just a bunch of purple smoke, you couldn't see through it."
Out of an abundance of caution, all students were sent home for the day. School is scheduled to resume tomorrow.
