Kamloops Search and Rescue (KSAR) was tasked out to the Tranquille Slot Canyons area on Monday afternoon to rescue a hiker suffering from heat exhaustion.
The call for assistance from the BC Ambulance Service came around 3 pm as Kamloops saw record-breaking temperatures around 36°C.
A pair of nearby KSAR members were nearby and able to get to the scene quickly.
They provided immediate hydration and first aid to the hiker before assisting them out of the canyon.
“This marks the second rescue that KSAR is called out for this summer involving heat-related illness in the Tranquille Slot Canyons,” a KSAR debrief explained.
“We are becoming increasingly concerned about social media posts promoting this hike without fully communicating the risks involved.”
According to KSAR, the trail is undeveloped, extremely steep and descends into the Tranquille Valley, making the return hike “physically demanding and hazardous” if unprepared, especially in significant heat.
“During this recent rescue, KSAR members observed several other hiking parties who appeared to be ill-equipped for the challenging conditions,” the debrief added.
KSAR is urging the public to research hiking routes through reputable sources, understand the physical demands of a trail before tackling it and be adequately prepared with lots of water, proper gear and emergency supplies.
