A large area in the Thompson-Nicola region is under a severe thunderstorm watch Friday afternoon.

Environment Canada issued the warning because “conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing heavy rain.”

The Northern Fraser Canyon, including Lillooet, the Nicola including Merrit and western areas of the South Thompson including Kamloops, Cache Creek, Ashcroft and Spences Bridge are included in the weather statement.

According to Environment Canada, there is a “heightened risk” for debris flows over areas impacted by recent wildfires.

There is also a potential for heavy downpours that could cause flash floods or water pooling on roads, the weather agency says.
