With a new school coming to the city, School District 73 is inviting the community to submit name suggestions.
The future 453-seat school will be located in Pineview Valley, along Copperhead Drive, and will serve students from K-Grade 7.
Construction on the school is anticipated to begin this spring and is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2026 school year.
In February 2023, the Ministry of Education announced $65.3 million for the new school.
With the project moving along, SD73 will begin the process of accepting names for the school.
Residents can fill out a form here before Mar. 1, 2024.
Some of the criteria for name includes incorporating the street on which the school is located (Copperhead Drive), the geographical area (Pineview ValleY), a name with significance to local Indigenous communities, a name that reflects local, provincial and national diversities or a name that reflects a positive image of the school board.
Name suggestions could also include a person's name, if there is written support of a family representative, and if the name is used posthumously, and after five years of their passing.
According to the latest update from the school district, preliminary earthworks for the new school were completed as of late December. That includes tree and vegetation removal and the installation of erosion and sediment control structures on the site.
The next step will see the remaining work put out to tender, which is anticipated to happen around the middle of February.
