An undisclosed location on the North Shore of Kamloops is now considered a sacred site after ancestral remains were found earlier this week.
In a statement sent out by Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc, the remains were located on Thursday and Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc is requesting that the site be respected, adding that any alteration or disturbance to the site is illegal.
“Cultural heritage is an important value for TteS and we have a responsibility to ensure that our TteS cultural and traditional practices are being respected,” said Kúkpi7 (Chief) Rosanne Casimir.
“Our people have been here since time immemorial and travelled extensively throughout Secwepemcúl̓ecw.”
Casimir added that the RCMP continues to be a great partner and was quick to communicate with Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc.
"The area is currently under 24-hour security, and we request that the public and media avoid the area to allow Tk̓emlúps to complete important work,” added the statement.
“We would like to thank and encourage the public to always report potential remains and/or artifacts to the nearest RCMP detachment and Tk̓emlúps.”
