The Stk’emlúpsemc te Secwepemc Nation (SSN), consisting of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and the Skeetchestn Indian Band, has acquired some land next to the Kamloops airport.
In a newsletter, the SSN announced that a 140 acre parcel of land adjacent to YKA was obtained this month.
According to the newsletter, the plot of land was used as an agricultural research station for 80 years but shut down operations in 2013.
For the past nine years, SSN has been engaging with the federal government and "indicated its interest in having the land returned to its original owners."
Earlier this month, representatives of the federal government gave confirmation that the land was to be returned to the SSN, explains the newsletter.
A design firm has also been contacted to discuss a land use plan for the sprawling plot of land situated in Secwépemc'ulucw, the traditional territory of the Secwépemc.
More details will be provided in the future for the official signing ceremony.
According to the website, “the SSN consists of [...] one of the seven historic 'divisions' of Secwepemc Nation.”
