TRU is hosting a free repair cafe next week

The Thompson Rivers University Sustainability Office is hosting a repair cafe next week.

On Tuesday, Mar. 5, people can bring small household items or clothing and textiles to have them repaired by a group of volunteers.

The free event is open to the entire community and will be happening on the first floor of the Brown Family House of Learning (next to Tim Hortons) from 10 am to 3 pm.

No registration is needed and there will be free snacks on site.

“Repair Cafés are part of a growing international grassroots movement that aim to reduce waste, overconsumption, and planned obsolescence,” a release from TRU says.

“They can re-ignite the do-it-together and "do it yourself" spirit and strengthen social cohesion.”

If your item cannot be repaired, volunteers can help direct you on how to sustainability recycle or dispose of the item.

Items like clothes or blankets, small appliances like lamps, kitchen appliances or vacuums, wood furniture that needs simple repairs like loose parts or missing screws and bicycles can be brought to the event.

A few items cannot be accepted, however. That includes gas or fuel powered devices, computers or cell phones and anything that needs two or more people to carry.

The TRU Repair Café is part of SDG Week Canada (March 4-8, 2024), a week-long celebration promoting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
