Students at Thompson Rivers University will have more options for housing near campus by next summer.
The province and university have partnered to build an 80-room, 148-bed building on the vacant portion of TRU’s east village.
Kamloops City Council approved the rezoning for this property near Dalgleish Drive earlier this year.
In a news release, the province says the four-storey building is set to be completed in summer 2023.
The development is Phase 1 of a three-phase plan for the university to build three new student housing buildings near campus.
This project will include site preparation for the future buildings, including utility relocation and paving the parking lot.
“On-campus student housing at TRU is always in high demand,” said Brett Fairbairn, president of TRU.
“This housing project will provide students with an extremely attractive and affordable option. These new units will also help to alleviate pressure on the rental market in Kamloops, which benefits the whole community.”
According to the press release, the province invested $10.85 million while the university is contributing nearly $8 million for the $18 million project.
