The temporary winter shelter at the Kamloops Yacht Club will remain in place until March 2023.
In a news release, The Mustard Seed confirmed that they will continue to operate the shelter for the rest of the winter.
The shelter opened on Nov. 8 with 19 beds available for people experiencing homelessness.
Four full-time staff from The Mustard Seed will be on site with a security guard which is being provided by the City of Kamloops.
Although the shelter is open for twelve hours a day, Nyasha Manyanye, director of operations, hopes they will be able to operate it on a 24/7 basis.
“We have confirmed with BC Housing that a budget is in place, to continue the operation of the overnight shelter in the Yacht Club for the balance of the winter months,” states Manyanye.
However, The Mustard Seed will have to source staff and the resources to open the shelter full time, explains Manyanye. This could take several weeks.
There are now more than 200 shelter beds available in Kamloops.
This includes 19 at the Yacht Club, 25 at Stuart Wood, 40 at Emerald Centre, 22 at The Mustard Seed, 12 at Harbour House, 50 at Merit Place and 41 at Moira House.
