BC SPCA's Cruelty Department Investigators discovered a disturbing scene last week on a farm outside of Kamloops.
Nine badly malnourished horses are now in the care of the BC SPCA after they were seized from a property on East Shuswap Road. Two more horses that likely died of malnourishment were found buried close by.
“The horses were evaluated at two or three out of nine on the body conditioning score, meaning they were very malnourished and they all had very badly overgrown hooves,” said Lorie Chortyk.
“Our constables also found two deceased horses on the property, they were less than a one on a scale of one to nine on the body score."
The nine horses seized from the farm are currently receiving veterinary care in foster care homes around the Shuswap area and will be available for adoption as soon as they become well enough.
"In a case like this, I'm sure we will be recommending charges," explained Chortyk. "Constables will put the evidence into a report for the Crown Council and then a decision will be made about pressing charges."
The BC SPCA confirmed the only animals on the property were horses.
