A woman was rescued from the Thompson River Sunday night thanks to the help of two police officers and another civilian.
On Sunday, around 8:30 pm, RCMP officers were called to an area near Riverside Park East.
A news release said the caller saw a woman in emotional distress in the water under the train bridge.
“When police arrived on scene, they called out to the woman, but she did not engage and instead, began to float downstream,” said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP Detachment spokesperson.
“Fortunately, they were able to quickly flag down a civilian in a jet boat, who took them out to where the woman was floating, further into the main current.”
The woman was pulled from the water into the boat.
She was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to the hospital for assessment and care, police said in the news release.
One of the officers suffered minor injuries during the rescue but is expected to make a full recovery.
“The Kamloops RCMP Detachment is thankful to the civilian who was able to assist and help prevent the situation from becoming tragic,” police said.
