World Mental Health Day: Here are 4 local organizations that support mental health

British Columbians experienced an unprecedented fire season, drought, heatwaves and the COVID-19 pandemic has been ongoing for 19 months. Things can begin to add up and impact mental well-being.

In recognition of Oct. 10, here are four local organizations that offer mental health and community outreach programs.

1. CMHA Kamloops

The Canadian Mental Health Association aims to create a country of “mentally healthy people in a healthy society.”

The Kamloops branch is located at 651 Victoria St. and offers wellness programs like Bounce Back, suicide prevention, mental health first aid, shelter options, youth programs and bursaries for students.

CMHA Kamloops can also help with referrals to other community resources.

2. The Mustard Seed

The Mustard Seed was started in 1984 and operates in five cities across Alberta and BC.

This organization’s vision is to eliminate homelessness in the areas they serve while supporting people’s “physical, mental and spiritual needs.”

The services they offer include an outreach centre, wellness supports, employment help, a thrift store and a men’s recovery program.

3. A Way Home Kamloops

A Way Home began operating in 2012 and grew out of a youth homelessness action plan initiative.

The non-profit organization offers housing programs, education and employment support and a life skills program where youth can learn about self-development, physical and mental health, how to cook and plan meals and more.

Last month, the provincial government proposed that new supportive homes for youth and young adults would be built in Kamloops which would be called Katherine’s Place – named after former executive director Katherine McParland.

The Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society aims to “provide and promote culturally based, inclusive programs, supports and activities.”

Since 1972, this charitable organization has been offering an open-door place where everyone can drop in to meet the staff or learn about the free and confidential programs.

The programs offered include:

  • Early childhood development, family preservation, youth services
  • Outreach support
  • Elder wellness and cultural services
  • Addictions counselling
  • Access to a mental health clinician

Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society also offers a wide variety of cultural art projects and cultural presentations for youth.
